      Semana Santa sa Bantayan Island

You may heard a lot of Bantayan
Islands unique celebration of Holy Week (Semana Santa). It is an amazing thing for to to witness when you get there in Bantayan.  According to these stories, while Christians all over the world sit quietly and fast in their homes, Bantayanons eat meat (lechon, to be more specific) and hold huge parties during Christendom’s most holy period. Why, exactly, you ask? Well, local historians say that in the 1800s, a papal permission exempted the residents of Bantayan Island from their religious duty on Good Friday. It is said that Bantayanon fishermen usually do not set out to fish during Good Friday. And since Bantayanons usually eat fish, they eat meat on Good Friday, instead. And (luckily, hehe) this tradition survived until this very day.

A practical fact that seems to be contradicting this history is that, a lot of visitors are joined together in this island during Holy Week. Maybe due to the fact that Santa Fe is a nice place to be in during summer but also, Semana Santa is a fair moment to celebrate and at the same time, to be with your loves ones in spending a once in a while holiday. So, the natives being known to be hospitable, have to treat there visitors with whatever they have. Coincidentally, this time of the month is not a good season for an abundant fishing. Therefore, natives are driven to serve meat and other resources of poultry products for the sake of their visitors' consumption. For these and other reasons, one truth will always prevail- a lot of religious people prefer to celebrate Semana Santa in this wonderful island both to relax and participate in this holistic celebration.
